Exploring THE TEMPEST pick n’ mix exercises

 

Getting to know THE TEMPEST. These exercises can be done alone, in pairs or small groups:

 

  • Describe Prospero in 250 words for someone unfamiliar with the play

  • Describe Miranda in 250 words for someone unfamiliar with the play

  • Describe Caliban in 250 words for someone unfamiliar with the play

  • Describe Ariel in 250 words for someone unfamiliar with the play

 

 

  • You are aboard the ship being thrown around by the storm. Write down how you feel and what you can see around you

  • You awake upon Prospero’s island, describe what you can see, hear, smell and touch. How do you feel?

 

 

FATHER, ANGUISH, FRUSTRATION, WONDER, LOVE, CAPTIVITY, SADNESS, LONLEYNESS

 

  • Find lines in the text where Miranda expresses three of the emotions above

  • Find lines in the text where Ferdinand expresses three of the emotions above

  • Find lines in the text where Caliban expresses three of the emotions above

  • Find lines in the text where Ariel expresses three of the emotions above

 

 

  • Select a short section of text from Prospero, Caliban or Ariel and rewrite it into modern English.

 

 

  • Create a map of the island detailing where all of the action within the play takes place.

 

 

  • Imagine you are Miranda, Ferdinand, Trinculo or Stephano and write a diary entry reflecting on the events you were part of.

 

 

  • Imagine you are looking at the island for the first time. Describe what you see using the iambic pentameter as the meter for your writing.

 

 

  • Which themes do you think are the most important in the play to you? Write down why and find at least 3 lines within the play to explain your thoughts.
